January 11, 1942 — a Japanese torpedo strikes the USAT Liberty in the Lombok Strait. The crippled ship is beached on Tulamben's black sand shore, where she rests for 20 years. Then in 1963, Mount Agung erupts — tremors push her into the sea, and a legend is born. Today she lies at 3 to 30 metres, her coral-covered hull teeming with 400+ species. One of the most accessible wreck dives on the planet — and it's right here.
